Material handling equipment includes machines and tools used to move, lift, position, stack, load, unload, and store goods. The correct equipment depends on the load and the task. A pallet truck moves palletized goods close to the floor, while a stacker raises pallets to a higher level. Drum-handling equipment controls cylindrical containers, and a loading ramp creates a working route between different heights.

Pallet Trucks for Horizontal Movement

Pallet trucks are compact devices used to raise pallets slightly and move them over short distances. Hand pallet trucks use a manually operated hydraulic system, while electric pallet trucks add powered travel and, depending on the design, powered lifting.

They are commonly used for:

  • Warehouse order movement

  • Retail stock transfer

  • Truck loading and unloading support

The pallet opening, fork dimensions, load weight, floor condition, and travel distance should be checked before selection. A pallet truck does not replace a stacker when goods must be raised to storage height.

Pallet stackers move and raise palletized goods. Manual, semi-electric, pedestrian, and electric versions serve different operating frequencies and lift requirements.

A stacker may be used to position pallets on low or medium-height storage levels, load certain vehicles, or raise materials within a production area. Buyers need to consider rated capacity, lift height, lowered mast height, aisle space, pallet type, and floor condition.

Headroom is especially important. Doorways, ceilings, lighting, and other overhead structures must be measured against the mast at relevant operating positions.

Lift Tables for Work Positioning

A hydraulic lift platform raises materials to a more convenient working height. Rather than carrying every load through the warehouse, it is commonly used beside assembly, packing, processing, or maintenance stations.

Lift tables can reduce repeated bending and help workers position loads more consistently. Platform size, lifting range, capacity, mobility, controls, and guarding should reflect the actual task.

They should not be treated as personnel lifts unless specifically designed and approved for that purpose.

Drum Handling Equipment

Drums require dedicated equipment because their round shape makes ordinary handling unstable. Drum trucks support floor movement, drum stackers add lifting capability, and electric drum lifters reduce manual effort during repeated handling.

Some handlers are developed for lifting, carrying, tilting, rotating, or emptying compatible drums. The drum’s material, rim, diameter, height, contents, and weight must match the gripping method.

Forklift drum attachments can handle drums at greater heights or as part of a forklift workflow. They must be rated and compatible with both the drum and forklift.

Loading and Vehicle Equipment

Loading ramps and dock equipment bridge changes in height between a warehouse floor, loading area, container, or vehicle. Tail lifts support loading and unloading directly at the rear or side of a truck.

Ramp length, gradient, surface, width, edge protection, capacity, and vehicle compatibility all influence safe use. Mobile ramps also require secure positioning before equipment travels over them.

Forklift attachments extend the tasks a forklift can perform. Examples include drum handlers and other load-specific tools. Every attachment changes the forklift’s operating characteristics, so capacity and compatibility must be reviewed.
