A tail lift is a hydraulic or electro-hydraulic platform mounted at the rear or side of a commercial vehicle. It is used to transfer cargo between ground level and the truck’s loading floor when a loading dock, forklift, or fixed lifting system is unavailable.
It is commonly called a truck tail lift, liftgate, tailgate lift, or hydraulic tailboard.
A truck bed may stand more than a meter above the ground. Manually lifting heavy cargo through that height difference is slow and dangerous. A tail lift creates a powered platform that raises or lowers the load in a controlled vertical movement.

The vehicle parks on a stable surface and the operating area is secured. The platform is deployed and lowered. Cargo is moved onto the platform with a pallet truck, trolley, or roll cage. The load is positioned according to the manufacturer’s instructions and the platform raises it to truck-bed level.
After the cargo enters the vehicle, the platform is folded or closed into its travel position.
The sequence is reversed during unloading.
Retail, parcel, food, and beverage fleets may visit locations without loading docks. A tail lift allows each vehicle to carry its own lifting interface.
Furniture, machinery, equipment, and packaged goods can be transferred without relying entirely on manual lifting.
