The number of pallets that fit in a truck depends on the pallet dimensions, cargo-body length and width, loading orientation, stacking permission, payload limit, axle distribution, and space needed for material-handling equipment. A standard 53-foot dry van commonly carries 26 standard 48 × 40-inch pallets in a conventional layout, but some configurations may accommodate more when dimensions and loading conditions permit.
To estimate pallet positions, obtain the truck’s usable internal dimensions rather than relying only on its advertised exterior length.

A trailer may have enough floor area for a certain number of pallets but still reach its legal payload or axle limit first. This frequently happens with beverages, metal components, machinery, tiles, and other dense products.
The calculation should include:
Pallet tare weight
Product weight per pallet
Dunnage and restraints
Pallet-truck weight carried inside the vehicle
Tail-lift weight added to the truck
Front and rear axle distribution
Maximum vehicle payload
Permitted road weight in the operating region
A standard 48 × 40-inch pallet can be positioned with either side facing the trailer length. Placing two 40-inch sides across the trailer width is a common arrangement. Turning the pallets may create additional theoretical positions, but loading tolerances and access can become tighter.
Mixed pallet sizes require an actual loading diagram. A simple average will not show unused spaces between incompatible footprints.
Double stacking can increase unit count without increasing floor positions, but only when:
The lower product can withstand the upper load
Pallets are stable and undamaged
Total height fits the cargo body
Weight and axle limits remain acceptable
Cargo can be secured against movement
Loading equipment has sufficient lift height
Stacking should never be used merely to reach an advertised capacity.
